How many bones form the maxilla?

2

Two bones form the maxilla. Each side of the upper jaw is a maxillary bone, and the left and right halves fuse along the midline (intermaxillary suture) during development to create the full upper jaw. The maxilla houses the upper teeth, forms part of the floor of the orbit, the sides of the nasal cavity, and contains the maxillary sinuses. Because the upper jaw is made from two distinct bones, the correct count is two. Thinking it’s one would miss the bilateral structure, while three or four would mix in other facial bones or regions, not the maxilla itself.
